5am Club, Resilience takes practice

October 21, 2022

I considered giving up on the 5am Club. I went a whole week without getting up this early. I get to bed around 9:30pm but have trouble actually going to sleep. It may take at least an hour until I’m asleep. Then, I wake up around 2 or 3am and stay awake for at least another hour. So what’s the point in getting up at 5am when I get only 4 to 5 hours of sleep? I figure I can still do 20 minutes of exercise, 20 minutes of meditation, and 20 minutes of learning after I drop off the kids to school.

That said, today I actually got up at 5am. To top that off, I got to sleep around 10 and was uninterrupted. Definitely not a full 8 hours, but 6 hours is pretty good. I am not sure why I was able to get a decent night’s sleep. I’m assuming it’s because I fasted yesterday and I’m sure the bottle of Guinness I had for dinner had something to do with it.

As I write this, it is now 6:42am and I am reminded of how refreshed I feel after a 20 minute abs exercise, 20 minutes of meditation, and 20 minutes of learning 300 digits of pi. I’m reminded of how peaceful it is when the rest of the world is still asleep. When the only thing I hear is the clock in my living room softly ticking and the distant white noise of traffic, I feel better able to organize my thoughts and schedule for the day. Yes, I will continue the 5am Club. And yes, I will reach my $90 mil. Resilience definitely takes practice.
